Spot Coffee 2009

SPoT approached me in January for prospective future projects and we agreed to begin work shortly after, here is a selection of many items that I had made for print in a variety of sizes, formats and applications. I will be updating with photography soon.

First while playing with ideas for their first job, which were updated takeout menus, I explored updating the logo as well. The logo from 1996 on the left and today’s on the right.

At first instinct I dreamt of rich colors for the new menu, but would later be turned away for the light print contrasted to darker background is harder to read in general. An idea Spot wanted to explore was to possibly try photography as an inner spread for each location... another visual gamble. These below were not however intended to be opposite sides of each other.

And the final selection, with a twist of a ‘ coffee stain’, inside and obverse side.

Next items in the spring were retail Water bottle labels, Quick Buzz tickets (pre-paid brewed coffee tickets with the great advantage of skipping the line!) and the SPoT Card, an electronic store credit card usable at all locations.

In May, SPoT’s newest location premiered in Williamsville, NY. A campaign to advertise the grand opening was launched to announce the Grand Opening and the new kitchen item, hearth-baked gourmet pizzas. An ad for the Shakes, appeared in the Amherst Bee shortly after ca. June/July.

In August we explored avenues for reissuing the paper to-go cups in all sizes. Switching manufacturers had left me with the task of reverse engineering the print template of their sample by cutting it at the seems and figuring in bleed areas.

Below are exercises in finding out which direction to move next. Their final pick is at the bottom, rather conservative-- They appeared in the stores in September, I will be posting photos of the cups as well as adding here the on-location photos of the Menu Boards that followed the take-out menus in April.

In September, SPoT approached me for a business card run for all levels of management, from store assistant shift managers to the executives in the US and Canada.

First ideas by request were to mimic the looks of the eCard, shown in the top samples. In the end the exact layout of the eCard was used as shown in the bottom examples which are final edits in print.

The finals include over 25 total formatted cards for all levels of management.
